Description:
Morris Dancing is an English tradition of dance and music which survives as part of a ritual designed to shake off the dark and gloom of winter and celebrate the coming of spring. While the origins of the tradition are lost in ancient times, the general opinion is that the dance is quite old, possibly derived from pre-Christian rites, passed down by word of mouth (and jingle of bell) from father to son, generation after generation. Villagers in secluded Bampton, Oxfordshire, say Morris Dancing has been performed at Whitsuntide every year, except in time of war, for over eight hundred years. Even then, there are indications that Morris was a custom “from time out of mind.” Shakespeare mentions the dance in several of his works, and one of his star actors, Will Kemp, was a “Morrice Dauncer.” Maroon Bells Morris Dancers (www.maroonbellsmorris.org) are one of almost 200 Cotswold Morris teams that have sprung up in this country in the last several decades. We have been bringing prosperity and the celebrated “Morris Luck” to onlookers at Colorado festivals and fairs for 28 years. Breathless in Berthoud Border Morris Dancers dance in the more boisterous and energetic Border style from England's Welsh border region. It was often performed by out of work coal miners for Christmas or beer money. Both teams have even been featured on the Tonight Show starring Jay Leno. The Tommyknocker's Morris currently range from 6 to 14. Started among children of performers, they have grown into a performance group in their own right, and meet monthly in Berthoud We are always looking for dancers and musicians to come and join us in this most "ancient and mysterious" fun. Check out our websites for more information.
